A Study in Scarlet

"Alright, Mr. DeMille; I'm ready for my close-up."

"A Study in Scarlet" is a for-charity, digital-only Moriarty the Patriot fanzine centered around the theme of fashion. All profits made from this project will go to the Palestine Children Relief's Fund. The PCRF is a long-standing charity that assists in getting the children of Palestine medical aid and treatment.

The Theme of Fashion

We intend to portray the zine in a way that mirrors real fashion magazines. Page artists will feature concept art (sketches, break-downs of outfits, etc.) alongside their illustration and writers will have the opportunity to create extras such as interviews.Whether it's historical, modern or designer fashion, specific aesthetics or the culture surrounding fashion (photography, modeling, etc.), we hope to create a diverse and expressive zine.

The Theme of Scarlet

To tie all pieces together, we decided on a common theme throughout all pieces: each work has to contain a scarlet item. For artists, we look for the scarlet item as part of the fashion. It can be anything from garment, shoes, jewelry, accessories, make-up or hand-held items, either as a small highlight or essential to the presentation! For writers, we look for the mention or involvement of anything scarlet. It should stand out in the scene, so we encourage to get creative!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a zine?
A "zine" or "fanzine" is a fan-made and fan-published collection of art and writing for a certain franchise. This zine is dedicated to Moriarty the Patriot and centered around the theme of fashion.
What fashion is allowed?
Almost anything. Historical, specific aesthetics, modern, designer, etc.
Which time period and fashion styles are allowed? Canon-era accurate or modern?
Anything! MTP Canon (1870s-1880s), Retro, Historical, Modern, Designer, Fantasy, etc. Of course, the final content will depend on what the contributors want to create. Everything will be neatly organized for ease of viewing.
Where do the profits of the zine go?
This zine is for-charity. All profits made from this project will go to the Palestinian Children Relief's Fund.
Is the zine digital or physical?
This zine will be digital-only with digital merch & printables. Since this is a for-charity zine, we want to focus on its quality and timely completion so that 100% of your money goes to charity instead of production cost and shipping fees. Thank you for understanding.
Will there be merch?
Yes! We will offer a variety of digital merch alongside the zine. Stay tuned to find out what merch awaits you.
What is the rating for this zine?
This zine is rated Mature (16+). It will not feature explicit imagery or content, but we intend to keep the mature and sensual energy of fashion magazines.
How many contributors will work on this?
This will be determined by the applications! Since we are not restricted by physical printing, we do not wish to limit ourselves.
Will there be character assignments so the zine won’t be dominated by one or two specific characters?
We will aim for a diverse portrayal of as much of the cast as possible. All contributors will be asked to submit multiple pitches and we encourage to vary between the depicted characters.
Are ships allowed?
Contributors are free to portray whatever character pairs or groups they like, but romantic or sexual content is to be excluded.
Are you only accepting fanfic/article submissions in English?
Yes. The zine is strictly in English only. The same goes for applications. We will judge your English work only, as the final product will need to be in English as well.
How many pieces will a participant make? Is there a limit? To what extent will artists be involved?
Page Artists will draw 1 illustration and provide some concept art like sketches, drawings of the outfit pieces, etc.
Merch Artists will create 1-2 types of digital merch.
Writers will write 1 piece of fanfiction. They can write short fictional interviews or articles as extras if they want to.
Do I need to know English?
We have the basic requirement of being able to communicate with the mods. Writers will also need suitable and adequate language skills for their work.
Besides that, you do not need to be a fluent English speaker and we will assist with any language barriers. We have support for Japanese, German, and Tagalog. For languages not mentioned above, please understand that we will use translation tools. As long as you are willing to communicate, we will find a way!Are you only accepting fanfic/article submissions in English?
Yes. The zine is strictly in English only. The same goes for applications. We will judge your English work only, as the final product will need to be in English as well.
Will the zine be entirely in English? Will you consider getting translators?
The zine will be entirely in English. We will not offer translations or hire translators due to various reasons relating to security, time, etc.
Are collaborations allowed?
Yes, page artists and writers are free to work together. Kindly notify us during pitch period or before anything is made.
Is traditional art allowed?
Yes, but we require a clean, high-quality scan of your work. You will need to scan in at least 300dpi.
Can cosplayers participate?
We are sorry to say that we will only have page artists, merch artists and writers in the project.
Are reference poses allowed? Some zines in the past didn't allow that.
Yes, we do allow the use of reference poses for submissions. We encourage artists to use whatever tools they find helpful in bringing their vision to life. The only thing we don't allow is tracing over other people's work.
Are we going to get contacted regarding the project, or how do we learn about the news?
We will contact all successful applicants via email first. So make sure you put the correct email. Non-participants & Supporters will still receive updates via our social media posts.
Would it be ok to add a mini games section to the zine? e.g. bingo, quizzes, activities that readers can participate in and share their results online?
We’re actually working on a few! Please look forward to them being posted on our socials. If you’re a contributor interested in creating mini games, please discuss with the mods during pitch period.
Is any fashion not allowed?
We will exclude any offensive depictions or cultural appropriation. The zine will not include NSFW pieces. We hold the rights to refuse any pitches that the mod team deems inappropriate. If you are unsure if your idea is acceptable, please talk to us! Let us exercise proper research and respect.
